Department of Health hopes to beat last year’s blood donation haul

Blood donations, as is well known, save lives.

But hospitals often face shortages of the precious biological fluid, which is why Jalisco’s Department of Health (SSJ) is busy highlighting the importance of giving a bit of yourself for the benefit of others.

The Health Department’s aim is to beat last year’s donation tally and collect at least 4,000 units of blood, which stand to help about 12,000 people. Each unit has the potential to positively affect the health of three people.

According to Maria Guadalupe Becerra Leyva, director of the State Center of Blood Transfusion, they’ve already met 60 percent of their yearly quota, and expect to pull ahead of last year’s by 400 units at the end of 2018.

Blood donations can be made at Guadalajara’s two main public hospitals: the Hospital Civiles Viejo and Nuevo.
