Fans shut out for Chivas semi-final game; tie remains all square

The Jalisco government did not allow soccer fans inside the Akron Stadium Wednesday to watch the Guadalajara Chivas take on Leon in the first game of the two-leg Liga Mx semi-final.

A week earlier, some 3,500 fans attended the first quarter-final game against arch rivals America, which Chivas won 1-0.

The Chivas went on to defeat America 2-1 in the follow-up game at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium last Saturday, to advance to the semis.

Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro said allowing fans to watch the quarter final was a “pilot exercise” in order to prepare for the full opening of stadiums in 2021.

Alfaro said the exercise was useful in determining future strategy for other types of massive outdoor events. He said a similar exercise will be held at a future Charros de Jalisco baseball game.

Chivas and Leon tied 1-1 in an exciting first semi-final game played Wednesday. The return leg will be played in Leon on Saturday, December 5, 9 p.m., with the overall winner in the two games facing either Cruz Azul or Pumas (both Mexico City based teams) in the Liga Mx final.
