The American Society (Amsoc) kicks off the new year with a fascinating first talk in its 2025 Speaker Series.
On Wednesday, January 8, 6:30 p.m., Dr. Shamika Klassen will speak on “Technowomanism and Mujerista Theology: Liberation Theology and Technology.”
“Everyone has a theology, and this talk will discuss a liberation theology I developed,” says Dr. Klassen. “It is grounded in womanism and technology, and also includes an introduction to a liberation theology established by Cuban-American Catholic activist-theologian Ada María Isasi-Díaz.”
Dr. Klassen holds a degree from Stanford University in African and African American Studies, a Master of Divinity in Ethics from Union Theological Seminary in New York City, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of Colorado Boulder. She is currently a researcher at Google, where she advocates for the experiences and perspectives of the global majority.
All are welcome to attend the talk.
Other Amsoc events this month include the Book Club meeting on Thursday, January 20, when participants will discuss “Desi Arnaz: The Man Who Invented Television” by Todd S. Purdum. This biography details the extraordinary life of the visionary Cuban American who revolutionized television by inventing the three-camera live filming technique and creating the classic sitcom “I Love Lucy.”
Additionally, volunteers from Democrats Abroad Guadalajara will be at Amsoc every Thursday, beginning January 15, from noon to 2 p.m., to help U.S. citizens register to vote for the upcoming midterm elections.
