Lakesiders celebrate Canadian and US holidays

Lakeside area expats are celebrating the national birthdays of Canada and the United States at a series of parties going on throughout this week.

Canadian Club of Lake Chapala hosted a Canada Day dinner held on Tuesday, July 1 at La Nueva Posada. Guadalajara’s Canadian Consul Miguel Uy was the guest of honor among the group of 50 local residents gathered for the sit-down BBQ feast. Wally Mills, Karen Doyle and Connie Gauvreau split up the package of two bottles of wine — one red and one white — for their first place tie standing in a tricky Canadian trivia quiz. Kay McCowan was awarded a Canadian baseball cap as the booby prize.

Although downpour early in the day slowed down the start of the Lake Chapala Society’s annual Can-Am Celebration on Wednesday, July 2, the skies cleared just in time for the hungry lunchtime crowd that turned out to sample burgers and brats, corn-on-the-cob and sweat treats offered at food stalls.  Highlighting the party theme “People Helping People,” the event also showcased the activities and services of local charity and non-profit organizations.
