Champion cooks dish up tasty treats at July CASA gathering

At last month’s Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) meeting, members competed in two categories: poultry main dish or cookies and bars.

While the dishes were being judged, Alex Sgroi, owner of Alex’s Pasta Bar, spoke to the group and discussed the importance of quality ingredients and the making of pasta.

Honors in the poultry category went to Catherine Suter’s chicken Chiquita (first place and presentation vote), Mary Ann Waite’s Vietnamese chicken ball with cilantro dipping sauce (second place and people’s choice vote) and Wendy Hamblin’s breast of chicken in lemon herb sauce (third place).

There was a tie for first place in the cookies and bars category between Rick Feldmann’s chocolate chip cookies and Bev Denton’s date lebkchen. Feldmann also won the people’s choice in this category. In second place was Keith Sofka’s almond biscotti with orange confetti and taking both third and the presentation vote was Esi Herrerias with her vegan children’s bars.

The next CASA meeting and competition will be at La Mision Restaurant at Monday, September 14, 4 p.m. There is no meeting in August.  For more information on CASA, email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or visit www.ajijiccasa.org.
