Chili Cookoff simmers nicely

Think you have the chops and foolproof formula to knock out a prize-winning batch of American style chili? Now’s your chance.

There are still a few open spots for contenders at the 41st Mexican National Chili Cookoff, coming up next weekend.

Chili contests are slated for Saturday, February 16 and Sunday, February 17, with tasting of up to ten entries each day starting at 12:30 p.m. Judges award cash prizes of 1,000, 750 and 500 pesos to the top three chefs. Winners of the People’s Choice vote earn an engraved trophy and bodacious bragging rights. Cooks are allowed to brew up chili any way they like it, from a traditional Texas style meat, hot peppers and beans belly-burner to innovative vegetarian and vegan concoctions. Check the charity event’s website, mexicannationalchilicookoff.com, for competition rules and sign-up information.  Then haul out the spices and get cookin’!
