Lakeside Presbyterian

Sunday, May 5, Dr. Wayne Cook draws our attention to what he believes is one of the greatest misunderstandings in the church today: God’s grace. In life we are judged on performance - how much we earn, charisma, generosity, kindness.  A natural instinct is to apply similar standards to our dealings with God; we are more comfortable with rules than a relationship. But grace differs from human perceptions.

Communion is offered immediately after services on non-communion Sundays (2nd and 4th).

Free Blood Pressure checks following service on May 5, at the nametag board.

Saturday morning classes for Spanish speakers continue: computer, sewing and English as a Second Language (ESL). The LPC nurse is on-site Mondays, 1 to 3 p.m., and Tuesday mornings.

Social Drop-In is Tuesdays, 2 to 4 p.m. Light snacks are served. LPC will soon introduce “Sixties Singalong” to Tuesday’s get-together, led by Cindy Paul and Freedom Chorale. Join us;  nothing lifts the spirits like song, especially enjoying together those we all remember!

LPC would welcome more volunteers to continue its Lakeside outreach. No matter what are your talents, they are needed; call (376) 106-0853.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church, San Jorge 250, Riberas del Pilar. English services, Sunday, 10 a.m.; Spanish services, 9 a.m.; Sunday School for Adults, 8:30 a.m. in the library; Bible Study, Fridays, 9:45 a.m. in the library.

Unitarian Universalists

So What DO UUs Believe Anyway? When someone says, “Hey, aren’t you a UU? What DO UUs believe anyway?” what do you tell them? Do you have your “elevator speech” ready, that is, can you tell someone in two or three minutes what UUs believe?

Sunday, May 5, Kathy Koches, long time UU and charter member of Lake Chapala Unitarian Universtalist Fellowship, will talk about the UU religion, and the things that UUs hold as their common principals.

Rather than, as some might say, UUs believe whatever they want, Koches explains that Unitarian Universalism encourages people to develop authentic beliefs, to test and refine them, and to practice living them. She will help you develop your own “elevator speech.” Bob Koches is the service leader.

The Unitarians meet Sundays, 10:30 a.m., at Hidalgo 261, on the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar, opposite the Catholic Church. Information: (376) 766-1119.

Non-denominational worship service is at 11 a.m. A family “comida” is held after the worship service.

Monday, May 6, Fun with Music sings at Ohana’s Assisted living care center in San Juan Cosala. Wednesday, May 8, the sing-along is at Mi Casita  assisted living care center in San Antonio Tlayacapan. Both events are from 4-5 p.m. with a carpool meeting at the Chapel at 3:30 p.m.

Lake Chapala Baptist

“If we live by the spirit, let us also walk by the spirit.”  Galatians 5:25

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 3:10).

Although we are not saved by works alone but by the grace of God, it is important that we demonstrate that grace in our lives. We need to walk the walk and not just talk the talk. Our life should tell the world that we are Christians by our love and compassion for others. We should reflect Jesus through who we are and what we do. Do we feed the poor, give a drink to the thirsty, house the homeless or do we turn our backs to the needy?  Particularly here, we have a unique opportunity to help others everyday.  We need to take to heart that as we do for the least of our people, we do it to Christ. Remember and rejoice in your compassion.

Lake Chapala Baptist Church is at Santa Margarita 147, Riberas del Pilar. English-language Sunday school is at 9:45 a.m.; English-language worship service is at 11 a.m. and Spanish-language worship service is 12:30 p.m.

Abundant Life Church

Have you ever been fearful? In this day there seems to be an overcoming sense that evil wins. There was a time when the best storyline had the champion win in the end, but today it is not so. This fear can be crippling. What can we do? Sunday, May 5, hear how God has a plan that includes setting you free from fear. The key to being free from fear is available to everyone and can conquer every problem that we face. You may be in a battle but the victory is ours in Jesus!

Abundant Life Church is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico and has services for everyone. Worship service in English is held Sundays, 10 a.m., and Bible Study, Wednesdays, 3 p.m. Spanish-language services are Sundays, noon. Spanish Bible studies are Wednesday, 6:45 p.m. A children’s ministry is held Saturday, noon, and bilingual youth meet Sunday, 6 p.m. Communion is celebrated the first Sunday of each month. Once a month, the women meet for a time of fellowship and the study of the Word of God (time and date announced each month).

The church is at Carretera Chapala-Jocotepec 140, San Antonio Tlayacapan, a block from Super Lake. Information: 331-417-7038.

Home Church Int’l

When we talk about knowing someone, it can mean a variety of things. Often it is to see if we are knowledgeable of or about a certain person. It might be an inquiry to discover if this certain person could be a well-known acquaintance. It could be a challenge to see if one really knows the personality, habits or reputation of a mutual acquaintance. Other inquiring motives could apply.

In the faith world, the word “know” travels different avenues. In at least one case, this word “know” in the original language here meant the carnal connection between male and female. But the life application of this word faces us bluntly. Jesus taught of many who will avow they had done many wonderful things in His Name. His reply was, “I never knew you. Depart from me …,”  talking about personal, active relationship with Him. How about people today, particularly those calling themselves Christian? Self-effort doesn’t cut it.

Pastors Paul and Susana Allen urge your eternal decision to enter into oneness with Christ now for His salvation and leading. Call the pastors at 332-242-8648. Carlos Alberto Lopez Martinez (left) and Karlissa Martinez-Lopez (center), founders of Marked by Heaven.org, receive a check in response to their grant application to St. Andrew’s Anglican Church R.A.’s Outreach Committee from committee member Sandra Carman at the distribution of grants held at the church last month. The funds will provide classroom supplies for Marked by Heaven’s daily Homework Club for 45 youngsters in San Pedro Itzican, a village east of Mezcala.  In all, ten local groups received grants, all funded by proceeds from the church’s Todo Bueno resale shop located next to S&S Auto in Riberas.
