Replacement for Ajijic Malecon bridges takes shape

Work kicked off on the Ajijic malecon bridges replacement project Monday, May 20.

pg16bpg16cSeveral teams and individuals have come together during the past two months to make this worthy cause a reality.

The Lakeside Garden Guild has provided financial assistance and project coordination, while Bob Howe and the members of InsideLakeside.com have also contributed funds.

Eloy Gonzalez with Have Hammers has been responsible for the rosewood selection and recommendation of sealer; Harry Bublin, representing Chapala Sunrise Rotary, has coordinated with the local police to provide safety tape to cordon off the work sites; and Hector España, the municipality’s community liaison, has been active organizing the city workforce.

Progress is moving forward rapidly with minimal impact to users of the malecon.

Just over 830 linear feet of rosewood has been purchased to revamp the bridges. Since this is a special order of wood, it requires on-site trimming and planning to create the smooth surface needed for the malecon.

The city employees have worked into the evenings to take advantage of the cooler temperatures required for the seal coat to preserve the wood for years to come.

Leading the team of carpenters is Juan Carlos Zamora (Carpenteria JC Gorys Shop), assisted by Antonio Correa, Rufino Palacios and Salvador Ramos.

A dedication ceremony for the bridges will be announced in the coming weeks.
