Unitarian Universalists

Rebecca  N. Eichler will present “Immigrant Issues” Sunday, March 8, at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

U.S. immigration lawyer Eichler will speak about the work of human rights advocates fighting for the rights and dignity of asylum seekers in Mexico and the U.S. Though the goal of U.S. policy is to deter, delay, and discourage asylum seekers, thousands of individuals are confronting the illegal and cruel process with compassion and skill. In the fall of 2018 when the migrant caravans crossed Central Mexico, the San Miguel community turned out to feed, clothe, and provide legal and medical attention to more than 6,000 men, women, and children walking north to the United States.

The U.S. government’s response to these people once they reached the border has been a stark contrast: In November, 2018, the U.S. president issued an executive order banning individuals from applying for asylum who do not cross at a designated entry point. In January, 2019, the administration targeted those arriving at the designated ports of entry and ruled they must remain in Mexico while their asylum cases make their way through the US immigration courts. In July, 2019, the government added a new hurdle: all people, including children, who traveled through another country en route to the United States are forbidden to apply for asylum.

Most recently, the administration has begun sending asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexican border to a remote corner of Guatemala to apply for Guatemalan asylum. Today there are more than 50,000 asylum seekers trapped in dangerous border towns in northern Mexico while they seek U.S. protection from harm in their home countries.

Lake Chapala Baptist

“God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.”  (Genesis 21:6.) Laughter is a blessing from the Lord. It’s the best stress-reliever there is. Through laughter, we can get through some of the darkest moments in life with a small smile. We can become closer with the people around us, celebrate moments of joy, and be thankful for the best friends we have. Laughter and smiles are the best universal communication available. Everyone understands the happiness that comes from laughter and it’s necessity in our daily lives. Today, laugh a little harder. Smile a little bigger. Appreciate the things that make you feel just that good.

Pastor John Linton will bring the message Sunday, March 8.

Abundant Life Church

Christians should be prepared for all the conditions of life. Some, misguided believers, think that once they are a Christian there should be no more problems and that God will always protect them, their family and belongings. This simply is not true. Our walk is by faith and not by sight. When we don’t have what we want or even need we are to trust God. The one thing that stands as an unmoving foundation in a difficult world is that God has promised His people a future. Our current situation may not show it but God is in charge. Sunday, March 8, Pastor Gary reminds us of the promises of God and that He always keeps his word.

Abundant Life Church is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico and has services for everyone. Weekly Sunday worship services, 10 a.m. and Bible study in English, Wednesdays, 3 p.m. Spanish language services, Sundays, noon, and Bible studies, Fridays, 6:45 p.m. Children’s ministry, Saturday, noon, and youth, Saturdays, 6:30 p.m.

Riberas Meditation

Ramana Maharshi taught self-inquiry as the most direct way for self-realization, to look within yourself and see what is always present, and never comes and goes.

There is no cost for Satsang. Books and meditation materials are provided for free. Satsang is hosted at the house of Richard Clarke, San Luis 73, Riberas del Pilar. Wednesdays from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Space is limited. Call 376-765-6976 or email This email address is being protected from spambots.
