In March, when the coronavirus pandemic hit Mexico, three of us decided we needed to do something to help our neighbors affected by the economic consequences of the health emergency.
At first, we donated food to the Family Services Agency (DIF), but then thought there must be others who are not helped by the municipal program. So we reached out to Chile, an artist in Jocotepec, who found us three families to support and a few more to supplement.
Our main focus soon became, Ana Rosa, a young widow with two infant children, who was living in the Jocotepec neighborhood of Chantepec under shredded tarps with no running water or food refrigeration. I reached out to my webgroup, ChapalaGals, in search of a reasonably priced, small refrigerator. The generosity and financial donations of these gals was amazing and as a result we were able to purchase a small, new refrigerator, as well as a heavy duty tarp to increase the size of Ana Rosa’s living space.
