Sunrise Rotary embraces remote Wixárika community

With contributions of health care services, useful equipment, pantry goods and assorted supplies, Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club has expanded its humanitarian aid programs to a Wixárika (Huichol) community located in the isolated Sierra Madre region of northern Jalisco.

pg24aThe project originated a few years ago, when Alan and Becca Pohl arrived from Canada with some medical supplies to help needy populations in Mexico. In Guadalajara, they met a Health Department representative who works with the indigenous Wixáritari people.  In describing the work being done and the needs of one of the hamlets, the official explained that there was a clinic operating ten days each month, but without services of an attending doctor nor basic medicines. The Pohls donated their antibiotics, health care materials and some Days for Girls menstrual hygiene kits prior to returning to Canada.
