On June 24, the fifth-grade class of My Land, a local Waldorf elementary school, performed “The Epic of Gilgamesh” in English at the BRAVO! Theatre, complete with a stellar set, lights, props and costumes.
This collaboration between the expat theater and the bright young students, their teachers and parents was a huge success.
The community is now invited to two encore fundraising performances on Friday, July 9, at 6 p.m. and July 10, at noon.
Before the “Iliad” and the “Odyssey” there was the “Epic of Gilgamesh,” the oldest known epic in the world, which predates Homer by 15 centuries. The tale of the handsome, arrogant, semi-divine king of Uruk not only recounts the adventures he shared with his companion, Enkidu, but also the maturation of the king from callow youth to wise king.
Amid the astonishing set (replicating the Ishtar Gate), and the imaginative costumes, the young thespians explore themes of friendship, animosity, love, death, immortality and the nature of the relationships between mortals and the divine – all in English!
The encore performances will benefit both BRAVO! and My Land School, whose values are “love, creativity, collaboration, communication and responsibility.”
