Unitarians
The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is now offering in-person services at the fellowship hall located on the carretera at Hidalgo 261, Riberas del Pilar and via Zoom. Covid-19 protocols are followed and masks are required. Services begin Sunday, September 5, 10:30 a.m. Instructions for accessing the online service are available at lakechapalauu.org.
“How to Let Go of Our Past and Write a New Chapter in the Book of Our Lives,” is the theme for this service with the Chavaruh Jewish Community: from Erev Rosh Hashanah (New Year’s Eve) to Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). Our service is led by Rev. Matt Alspaugh, with Bryan Kaplan and Elizabeth Katz of the Chavaruh Jewish Community. In a little more than an hour, Bryan Kaplan and Elizabeth Katz will lead you through iconic prayers, haunting music and prescribed actions of ten High Holy days. The shofar (ram’s horn) will sound, we will place stones on the graves of those who died, and we will beat our breasts as we admit our shortcomings and resolve to move on. Rather than rely on an anthropomorphic male God, we will rely on ourselves and on each other to make the transition from one year to the next.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church’s English-language congregation meets at 9:30 a.m. each Sunday.
It often seems that the happiest people are the ones who live in anticipation. Those who live in the past are disappointed by the present. They prefer the good old days. But those who foresee a better future and work toward it have purpose and joy. The apostle Paul tells us about the future that “we eagerly await” in his letter to the Philippians. This week, Associate Pastor Carolyn Hansen’s sermon is titled “What Are You Waiting For?” with Philippians 3:17-21 as the text.

Pastor John Linton based last Sunday’s sermon around the theme of the inevitable collapse of ungodly nations, using the book of Amos – a story of unrelenting revenge – as his foundation. He drew clear parallels between the “utterly barbaric” actions of Moab and the barely restrained evil which so relentlessly inundates the earth today. “We should be praying and weeping for the world’s ungodly leaders,” he declared. “And we must not trust nations, but Christ alone. By grace alone are we absolved.”
