Lake Chapala Baptist

Looking at the state of the world today, we cannot avoid the obvious: There is an alarming scarcity of righteousness on a global scale.

In last Sunday’s service, Pastor John Linton continued his in-depth examination of the book of Amos and the parallels to modern-day Christendom found in those epic chapters. “The rise and fall of nations does not begin in the hallways of power,” he said. “It’s the righteousness of a nation’s people that exalts any nation, and that starts with the word of God, clearly delivered across the Church’s pulpits.

“God is calling us to be a righteous people, a holy people, a pure people. The greatest curse in a people is shutting their ears to God’s words. Today’s religiosity is not grounded in the word of God, but in spiritual platitudes and indulging, compromising mysticism.

“There is a spiritual famine, a famine in the land!” he went on. “We should be praying for churches, praying that the light of Christ might issue forth from their pulpits, that the famine might be removed by God’s grace, that we might see a revival among the people of Chapala, and of the world!

“Can we stand up and say, We are the Church of the living God? We ought to!” he concluded. “Because we are!”

Lakeside Presbyterian

Pastor Wayne’s, sermon this Sunday, will be “The God of Deliverance.”

The second in the Bible Book series is Exodus. The book begins some 400 years earlier with Joseph, a great man of God who led his family to Egypt. But after all those years, there was a pharaoh who did not know Joseph, and the descendants were now enslaved. The keyword for the book is “Delivery.” Often when looking at Exodus we focus on Moses, but the great Deliverer of Exodus is God. The sermon includes: 1. The Prayers for Deliverance; 2. The Tool of Deliverance; and 3. The Plan for Deliverance.

Bible study is Wednesday, 10 a.m. in the church sanctuary. The book of Matthew is the current focus of this initial, interactive, study.

In-church services are at 9:30 a.m. (English) and 11 a.m. (Spanish). The live English service is streaming each Sunday on Facebook at Lakeside Presbyterian Church-Chapala. All masking and social distancing protocols are in place.

If you need someone to pick you up to come to church, contact LPC at 376-106-0853.

There are coffee and refreshments after the service in the Narthex.

Unitarians

February 20, “Emptiness,” will be the topic.

Emptiness, sometimes called boundlessness, is the idea in Buddhism that our understanding of the world of things is illusory, hiding a deeper, more interconnected reality. This idea is difficult, even impossible, to grasp cognitively, but may come to us through a spiritual experience like awakening. We don’t have to be practicing Buddhists to find appeal in this idea, suggested in our Principles as “the interconnected web of existence of which we are a part.” Rev. Matt Alspaugh will give the talk and the service leader is Annie Morris.

The February 27 service topic is “Emptiness” with “Post Polio/Covid Paradox” with Janice Kimball speaking and Carol Johnson as Service Leader.

Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship services are Sundays, 10:30 a.m. and, due to the outbreak of Covid at Lakeside, during the month of February all services will be by zoom only. The zoom link is //us-02web.zoom.us/j/233941792. The usual location of services is on the Carretera at Hidalgo 261, Riberas del Pilar.
