Rotary Club investigates wetland sanitation

On Saturday, February 19, members of the Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club journeyed to the pueblo of Casa Blanca in the municipality of Poncitlan to learn about their wetland sanitation project, which utilizes plants to clean sewage.

Since the group is beginning a sanitation project in Ojo de Agua, a neighborhood of the town of Mezcala, they wanted to learn the pros and cons of their system. The Rotary members learned about Casa Blanca’s water purification station, where they purify water and sell it to the villagers for 10 pesos a garrafon (much cheaper than the 40-45 pesos charged commercially), then proceeded to fields adjacent to the Santiago River where the system is working. They learned how they built it and are maintaining and improving the system. The folks from Casa Blanca will join the Chapala Sunrise Rotary on a field trip to Ojo de Agua Saturday, February 26. Find out how to become involved at chapalarotary.org. The group meets Thursdays, 10 a.m., at Restaurant Don Juan, Paseo Ramon Corona, Chapala. Guests are welcome.
