Chapala Commemorated

The 216th anniversary of the birth of esteemed Mexican President Benito Juárez with a ceremony held Tuesday, March 22, on the esplanade opposite City Hall.

Local Masons and Shriners joined government officials and school kids in paying tribute to the nation’s 26th president, renowned as the first chief executive of pure indigenous origin and a leader of the liberal reform movement, an affiliate of the Scottish Rite Freemasons while serving as Minister of Justice, Juarez penned legislation enacted in 1855 that restricted the privileges of the Catholic Church.
