Wednesday 18 January, at 5 pm: Contemplative Service in the style of Taizé.
Taizé songs combine Biblical texts with simple music. For Christians through the centuries, a few words taken up unceasingly have been a way of contemplation. Many find that Taizé chants help sustain private prayer. When the words are sung, they reach the depths of our being and come to underlie our work, conversations, and relaxation—uniting prayer with daily life. A characteristic of Taizé is its use of silence. Often, God’s voice comes in a whisper, in a breath of silence. When we rest in the silence of God’s presence, open to the Spirit, that is prayer.

Because the program requires a TV, it will be held in various homes, which will be announced week by week in the church bulletin.
Operation Feed: Our feeding program buys non-perishable food to donate to “Operation Feed,” which feeds about 150 families in and around San Juan Cosalá. If you opt for a cash donation, envelopes marked “Operation Feed” are available every Sunday.

Pastor John Linton was back at the pulpit in full force last Sunday, and his congregants listened eagerly to what he had to say. First off, he thanked us for being a faithful church, taking care of each other and being good stewards while he was gone. Music to our ears!
Appropriately, the sermon itself was on renewal. “With the coming of every new year,” he said, “God’s love and mercies are renewed. With new mercies, we believers hope for the renewal of our identities in Christ.
“And I remind you that God uses suffering to conform us to the image of Christ. Whatever life brings will expose who you are. Do you persistently live a life of faithfulness to God? Or have you, perhaps, forgotten what happiness is? Does darkness surround you, press in and inform you at times? My friends, the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. Trust Him!
“Place your hope in God in times of trouble and uncertainty. Turn toward Him, not away, and remember who you are… a child of the King! His mercies are renewed not just every year, but every morning. ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you,’ were His own words. Let us resolve to be ever more faithful, every day. Because you are in Christ, God’s power and mercies are with you always.”

“An Easy Way to Know Yourself” is the topic for the January 15 service.
In India, and the west, religion followed similar paths, first with a version in which the priests had all the power, then, after a thousand years or so, a revolt, saying that people can know directly, without priests. In Europe, this was the Reformation, started by Martin Luther and which led to the UU idea that we can know for ourselves. In India it was the Upanishads, 1,000 years after the Vedas. There are 108 Upadishads. Richard Clarke will give you the essence of all this, based on the shortest of them, the Mandukya Upanishad. This is the heart of the Fourth Principle. The Service Leader is Carol Johnson.

Christ Church Lakeside
Christ Church Lakeside will celebrate the second Sunday after the Epiphany by celebrating the Holy Eucharist together, and via Zoom, Sunday, January 15, 10:30 a.m., at our location with the red door and windows next to The Smokehouse Restaurant. Rev. Jim Powers will be the celebrant and give the message, “The Lamb of God”. The once-a-month Sunday potluck, will be held in the Church after the service, followed by the 2023 annual general meeting (AGM).
The AGM is open to all members of Christ Church Lakeside and is very important as the congregation votes on the proposed budget for this year, as well as filling various positions within the church. It’s also an opportunity to hear from the church departments as to what they did the past year and what they expect for 2023. Please stay for this meeting. Non church members are invited to attend if they wish, but have no vote.

This week Pastor Wayne will talk about The Gospel of John, one of the four Gospels in the New Testament believed to have been written by John the Apostle, who was one of Jesus’ closest followers. He is also thought to be likely the unnamed apostle that Jesus loved.
The first three gospels (Matthew, Mark & Luke) are called synoptic gospels since they were probably written earlier and share many similarities with each other. In contrast, John uses a lot of different material than those found in these preceding texts and often takes a unique approach when conveying his message. For instance, unlike Matthew or Luke there are no parables present in this gospel; instead symbols take center stage as an important tool for communicating spiritual truths about Jesus Christ’s mission on earth.
In Chapters 2-4 we see several encounters between Jesus and individuals which serve to reveal his divine nature as both teacher and healer for those around him. These stories demonstrate how God reveals himself through human interactions with others while providing hope for mankind during difficult times.
1. An Encounter with Mary. John 2:3 When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, “They have no wine.”
2. An Encounter with Nichodemus. John 3:4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? He cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born, can he?”
3. An Encounter with a Samaritan Woman. John 4:15 The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, so I will not be thirsty nor come all the way here to draw.”
English-language service begins at 9:30 a.m. Spanish service begins 11 a.m.. Everyone is welcome to the drop-in Bible study Wednesday, 10 a.m.

Heart of Awareness
The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Community offers times to meditate together at the Practice Center on Sundays and Wednesdays.
Sunday, January 15, the schedule is from 9 to 10 a.m. The library will be open from 10 to 11 a.m.
Wednesday, January 18, the meditation period is from 4 to 5 p.m. Following the practice period Marty Janowitz will give a dharma talk on The Four Noble Truths—the foundational tenets of Buddhism. The Wednesday sessions are also offered via Zoom. You’ll find the link on the website, heartofawareness.org.
An open group for practice and book study meets every Thursday, 1 to 2:30 p.m. February 2, the group will begin a new book, “In Love with the World: A Monk’s Journey Through the Bardos of Living and Dying” by Tibetan master teacher Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. Pema Chodron stated it is “one of the most inspiring books I have ever read.”

Trailblazer, maverick, even entrepreneur indicate a type of mindset. These people have something in common. They don’t just do what everyone else is doing but rather they are willing to risk everything doing what perhaps has never been done. These people have another thing in common, they can do great things for God. When we only do what has always been done or what others are doing we may or may not be following God´s design and plan for our lives. Come Sunday, January 15, as we look at the life of one hero of the Bible who started off trying to do what the others were doing but then moved to follow the special path that God had marked out for Him and ended up being a world changer. You too could be a world changer following God´s path.
