Jazz concert at Casa del Sol Inn

Enjoy a Jazz Supper Club concert by local jazz band Triálogo, with special guest from Spain, Lucas Martínez, at Casa del Sol Inn, Friday, February 24.

Triálogo is comprised of Sofía Ramírez on piano, Eleazar “Chuco” Soto  on saxophone, Gilberto Ríos on double bass and electric bass and Miguel Soto on drums. The concert will celebrate the release of their new album “Travesía” — the result of a year’s work involving composition, ensemble, recording and post-production.

Saxophonist Lucas Martinez was born in Blanes, Spain and is now based in Amsterdam. Growing up in the heart of a family of musicians, at the age of eight he decided to leave the piano and drums to focus on the tenor sax. Martinez has spent the major part of  involved in the complexity of the language of jazz and its rhythms, while improvising with family and friends. He has a masters degree from the conservatory in Amsterdam and has studied in Austria and Philadelphia.

Martinez plays actively with jazz groups in Spain and the Netherlands, including the Guy Salamon Group, Yuri Rhodenborgh Group, Identities Collective, Chai Masters, Alba Careta Group, and others. He has played in festivals in China, Mexico, the United States, Great Britain, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Italy, Austria and Poland.

This concert is part of the First Ajijic Saxophone Festival 2023 presented by La Cochera Cultural. The festival runs Friday, February 24 to Sunday, February 26, allowing artists and the Lakeside public the opportunity to delve into the wonderful world of this instrument.

Events include concerts, workshops, master classes and the projection of the feature film/documentary “El Saxofón Tapatío” by Diego Humberto León Jiménez, and “Saxofonista,” an exhibit of photographs by the same artist showing the life and work of musicians in Jalisco.

Martinez will be the resident artist and give workshops and classes during the festival.

Friday, February 24

10:30 a.m. An ensemble workshop given by Lucas Martínez is aimed at musicians and music students (free admission).

Saturday, February 25

10:30 a.m. Improvisation workshop by Lucas Martínez aimed at musicians and music students (free admission).

6 p.m. Inauguration at La Cochera Cultural of the photographic exhibition “Saxofonista,” composed of 20 photographs taken between July 2021 and November 2022. The series shows the night life of saxophonists that are part of the underground music scene in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara (free admission).

8 p.m. Screening of the documentary “El Saxofón Tapatío.” The documentary rescues the oral history of 25 saxophonists from Jalisco who have excelled for their level of performance. In it, the history of Jalisco’s musical culture is told by those who have been part of it from 1940, through the second half of the 20th century to the present day (free admission).

Sunday, February 26

6:30 p.m. Concert by the Lucas Martínez Project at La Cochera Cultural. Triálogo and Martínez present a special repertoire of original compositions, where the textures of European music are mixed with those created at Lake Chapala— a unique experience full of stories, emotion and adventure.  Entrance 350 pesos.
