Lakeside Presbyterian

This Sunday, March 19, Pastor Wayne will talk about Supremacy.

The letter to the Colossians was written by the apostle Paul while he was in prison in Rome, around 60-62 A.D. He wrote it to address some false teachings that were threatening to undermine the faith of the believers in Colosse, a small city in present-day Turkey. Paul wanted to remind them of the true nature of Jesus Christ.
Paul did not start the church at Colosse and had never been there. They knew that Paul had been instrumental in Colossians, leading their pastor, Epaphras, to saving faith in Christ. They also knew that Epaphras had gone to Rome to consult with Paul and had not yet returned.
The church members had received Paul’s letter, brought to them by Tychicus and Onesimus. But the false teachers in Colosse had been discrediting Paul and causing doubts in the people’s minds. “Why listen to a man who is a political prisoner?” they asked. “Can you trust him?”
The main false teachers were Gnostics. They we’re trying to blend Christianity with Greek philosophy. Gnostic doctrine taught that the world was created and ruled by a lesser divinity. They believed that the flesh was evil so many of them sought to deny their flesh. For some Gnostics that led to fasting and sexual abstinence. They also claimed that Jesus did not actually come in the flesh but only appeared to have a real body.

Lake Chapala Baptists

What does it mean to “know Christ?”

We can find the answer in Paul’s epistles, which have been the source of inspiration for our Pastor’s sermons over the course of many weeks this year.

“Knowing Christ is not some mystical knowledge,” he said, during last Sunday’s message to the church, “It’s an intimate understanding of His character and a gradual polishing of our own in His direction.

“The apostle Paul was willing to experience the same suffering as Christ,” Pastor Linton told his congregation, “so that he might enter into the fellowship of His suffering and the power of His resurrection.

“Even through extreme and constant persecution, Paul never stopped praising and glorifying the Lord. Christ left an example for all Christians, and today we can draw from it and receive the joy thereof.

“Are you, like Paul, crucified in Christ? This is evidence of surrender to the word of God. And that is, after all, where the knowledge of Christ resides.”

Share memorable weekly sermons, uplifting music, and an ongoing thirst for true wisdom Sundays, 10:45 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Baptist Church. Sta. Margarita 147, Riberas del Pilar.
