Weekly Worship - August 10, 2023

Unitarian Universalists

Sunday, August 11, Rev. Tim Boeve will present “The Value of Not Knowing” at the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship.

Rev. Boeve’s presentation arises from the book “Think Again,” by NYT bestselling author Adam Grant, an organizational psychologist, named Wharton’s top-rated professor for seven straight years. Grant argues that “Intelligence is usually seen as the ability to think and learn, but in a rapidly changing world, there’s another set of cognitive skills that might matter more: the ability to rethink and unlearn.” Boeve will share his own experience with thinking again and unlearning, having shifted many of his previously held views over time, becoming more “comfortable with uncertainty” about once iron-clad views. He will also share insights from the book including this gem, “The brighter you are, the harder it can be to see your own limitations. Being good at thinking can make you worse at rethinking.”

Joan Ward is the service associate.

Sunday service is  at  noon, at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s new location at San Luis 19 in Riberas del Pilar.

Abundant Life Church

What’s the difference between a plan that God approves of and one that doesn’t meet His standards? Some may respond saying that it depends on if it is good or bad (pure or sinful) but this is not always the case. There are times when God rejects our plan not because it is evil but that it simply doesn’t line up with His plan. Come this Sunday, August 11, as we learn the secret to knowing if our plan meets with God´s approval or not.

Abundant Life is affiliated with the Assemblies of God of Mexico. Weekly Sunday worship services in English start at 10:30 a.m. Services are on the Facebook page as well as the YouTube channel. The English services schedule is at abuntandtlifechapala.com. Carretera 140, San Antonio Tlayacapan.

“Believing Without Seeing” John 20:29.

“You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who have not seen and believe.”

The Dead Sea ScrollsOne are one of the most significant archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. They were discovered between 1947 and 1956 in the Qumran Caves near the Dead Sea. To authenticate the scrolls, at least seven different methods were used, including radiocarbon dating and DNA analysis of the animal skins. The findings are consistent, dating them between the third centuries BC and the first century AD. These authentic documents are the oldest known copies of the Old Testament in existence. The scrolls have been invaluable in understanding and translating the Bible.

It is essential to know something is genuine. What about the Resurrection? Is our faith a blind one, or is there substantial evidence to support its truth?

Sunday English-language services are at 9:30 a.m. The English-language service also streams live at facebook.com/LPCChapala. Spanish service begins at 11 a.m. Everyone is welcome to Wednesday drop-in Bible study. Calle San Jorge 250 in Riberas del Pilar, just south of Mom’s Restaurant, toward the lake.Abundant Life Church
