Whether you’re a newly arrived foreign resident at Lakeside or a long-timer looking to enrich your experience, the Lake Chapala Society (LCS) offers a variety of worthwhile learning opportunities.
To start, developing Spanish language skills is essential for effective communication with the area’s friendly Mexican hosts.
Introduction to Spanish is a three-session course designed to give beginners a foundational understanding of the language. Instructor Inez Dayer introduces students to Spanish pronunciation, basic vocabulary, and essential social protocols. New sessions—open to both LCS members and non-members—are held monthly on three consecutive Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to noon. Class sizes are limited to 12 students, with a minimum enrollment of four.
Español en Acción is a more comprehensive Spanish course available exclusively to LCS members. This 10-week workshop series caters to students at all levels, from beginner to advanced, with classes held twice a week. Bilingual LCS Education Coordinator Erika Morales leads the sessions, providing personalized instruction to small groups. Classes are offered on Thursdays from 3 to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Mexican Manners, a monthly two-hour class, is a practical guide to adapting to life at Lakeside by better understanding and embracing Mexico’s social culture. Open to both members and non-members, the class is ideal for anyone interested in learning how to engage more respectfully and effectively with the local community.
LCS Education Director Víctor Camarena leads this interactive session, exploring Mexican family values such as respect for elders, hospitality, and flexible timekeeping. He also offers guidance on commonly used courtesy phrases, non-verbal communication through hand gestures, and enough historical context to help participants gain a deeper cultural understanding.
Getting Your Jalisco Driver’s License is a two-part program offered monthly. It includes a two-hour classroom session held on the second Wednesday of each month, covering the required documentation, traffic laws, road signs, and interactions with police. The following week, students are accompanied to the licensing office in Chapala to complete the necessary tests and obtain their permits.
