Lakeside residents interested in traditional Mexican crafts and folk art may be pleased to learn that Centro Cultural Ajijic (CCA) manager Claudia Miramontes has authorized space for the Lakeside Textile Appreciation Group to hold its monthly meeting there.
The group spearheaded by Stephanie Schneiderman will gather at the centrally located CCA on the last Thursday of every month, at 11 a.m., starting on July 30. The first program will focus on an introduction to Pre-Hispanic women’s dress. Afterwards, those who wish can lunch together at a nearby Ajijic restaurant.
Schneiderman was on hand at CCA on June 25 to introduce the textile group program to newcomers and to promote a special excursion to Jocotepec she is leading on Wednesday, July 8, to admire the work of master weaver Rubén Mendoza Díaz. Jocotepec is recognized for the unique floral designs of hand-loomed wool serapes and blankets, produced through many generations of craftsmen, but now on the verge of becoming a lost art.
Participants will depart from the Centro Laguna Mall at 9 a.m., with a second pickup point location in Ajijic en route to the west end of the lake.
