The Lake Chapala Society’s Reaching Out Program offers friendly, regular check-ins for Lakeside residents who may be homebound, recovering from illness, or simply feeling isolated.
Most communication happens through email, WhatsApp or Messenger, making the program easy and accessible for anyone who prefers digital contact. Phone calls are used when needed.
The goal is simple: provide a bit of human connection and the reassurance that someone cares. For many participants, a short message is enough to brighten their day. Others enjoy longer email conversations. The program adapts to each person’s comfort level.
A key feature is its built-in safety net. If someone who normally responds suddenly goes silent, the volunteer contacts the participant’s emergency contact person. This step is used respectfully and has brought peace of mind to many families living far away.
Reaching Out was established in March 2020 as a response to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The service remains open to any lakeside resident who would benefit from a friendly check-in. Volunteers are compassionate, discreet, and often say they gain as much from the connections as the participants do.
