Laguna Chapalac – October 22, 2011

Double check the dates

A couple of glitches in last week’s edition may leave some of you scratching your heads – or even worse, showing up at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The correct date for the Hash House Harriers’ 20th Anniversary celebration is Tuesday, October 25 (Hotel La Nueva Posada).

The correct date for the garage sale to benefit the Tarahumara Project is Saturday, October 29 (Ocampo 98 at Seis Esquinas).

Thanks for that

The Lake Chapala Society and the Special Events Committee wish to thank the many volunteers and contributors who made the recent Oktoberfest such a success. They put out an apology to the many folks who wanted to join in the fun but found the tickets sold out. One hundred and thirty ticket holders and 50 volunteers got a taste of Bavarian food, music, and exuberant toasts. Everyone managed to consume plenty of beer, bratwurst and yummy side dishes.

Special thanks to the Corona team, along with David Ladd, Diane and Bill Pretti, Kim Cavelli, Linda Fossi, Ginger Perkins, Sandy Feldman, Helen James, Brad Felser, Anita and Ken Caldwell, Robert Hille

man, Jack Furnessm Clark Drummond, Bebe Hurd, Barbara Rothaler, Joann Schmidt, Gunther Schaeffer, Anita Strehlow, Javier Aquilier, Tim Schubert, Arlene Schubert, Dixie Strum, Leslie Martin, Justus Hauser, Karl Homann, Johanna’s Restaurant, Luisa Julian, Jay Shuffle, Bob Crisfali and El Figon Microbrews.

Learning opportunities

Martha Nussgen (young people’s advocate extraordinaire) is at it again. A few weeks ago she put out a call for financial help for tuition for classes at CONALEP for kids and young people who aren’t usually on the scholarship list. Community response to her request means that 40-some kids are now enrolled in basic computer and electricity classes on Saturdays.

The school is now willing to provide courses on Sundays for the kids who work on Saturdays. Besides the computer and electricity classes, CONALEP will soon offer plumbing, refrigeration, combustion and training in other trades. The cost is 500 pesos per students for the 20-hour courses taught over five weeks. A minimum of 15 to 20 kids is required to run a course. The school will provide all needed material and “proof of attendance,” with advanced classes in these disciplines to follow. Free transportation to CONALEP is being provided by DIF Chapala.

If you would like to sponsor one or more students for this program contact Dr. Nussgen at (376) 766-2549 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Father Danny Borkowski’s sermon topic will be “Whose Lord?” based on Matthew 22:23-46. What’s this “love” business all about, anyway?

Unitarians

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (LCUUF) meets each Sunday, 10:30 a.m. at Sta. Margarita 113 in Riberas del Pilar. The service on October 23 will be given by Fred Azbell and is entitled “Morals, Ethics and Common Sense.” Many people mistakenly believe that morals and ethics come from man-made religions. In fact, they are universal truths having nothing to do with the interpretations of man.

There will be a coffee hour after the service. For more information please call 766-1119 or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

St. Andrew’s Anglican

Fundamentalists? Those who know anything about the Anglican tradition will find that word surprising in the Anglican lexicon. But this Sunday’s sermon, “Fundamentalists, One and All” insists that there can be no faithful discipleship apart from fundamentalism. Confused? Welcome to the club! And welcome to St. Andrew’s where Sunday worship begins at 10 a.m. and is followed by a fellowship hour. The Church is located at Calle San Lucas 19, just a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar and there is easy parking available on the street or in the lot.

It’s just a few days until the Harvest Comida (Wednesday, October 26); and since this is a sit-down dinner, reservations are required. You can sign up Sunday at Church or Monday at the Church office between 9 a.m. and noon. Only 100 pesos and your choice of a dish to bring for the best turkey dinner you’ll ever have.
