Octoberfest
American Legion Post 7 in Chapala is putting on an Octoberfest luncheon Saturday, October 17, noon to 3 p.m. The menu is bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad, rye bread and dessert.
The festivities include music, raffle baskets and a 50-50 drawing. Get your tickets, 250 pesos, at the Legion now, Morelos 114 in Chapala. (The 4-7 p.m. seating has already sold out.)
Saintly mural
St. Andrew’s Anglican Church reopens for live worship services Sunday, October 18, 10 a.m. The congregation will unveil the “Dancing Saints” mural recently completed by local artist Javier Zaragoza. St. Andrew’s is at San Lucas 19 in Riberas del Pilar.

U.S. Voter Assistance
The Lake Chapala Get Out the Vote (GOTV) team will be offering in-person voter assistance weekly on Tuesdays, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., on the Neill James Mural Art Patio at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS). Sessions will be held every Tuesday in October. Voters are asked to consult their states’ deadlines first at votefromabroad.org/states. Required health protocols must be followed on the LCS campus.

Community Orchestra
The Lake Chapala Community Orchestra has been silent since the Covid 19 pandemic started in March. In an effort to re-establish live performances, Michael Reason, the orchestra’s conductor, has formed an 11-piece chamber ensemble from members of the orchestra that will give a performance Friday, October 23, noon to 2 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society. Music will include works by Johann Strauss, Albeniz, Holst, Piazzola and Gounod.
Social distancing will be adhered to during the performance.
LCS classes
• Exercise classes are already being reactivated as the Lake Chapala Society picks up various learning programs popular among members.
• Classes on the basics for obtaining a Jalisco driver’s license are set for October 28 and November 18, 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Lakeside patio. This class will provide you with the necessary knowledge to obtain a new license or to renew it. Topics to be reviewed include the types of driver’s licenses available and the necessary documents to procure them; the role of Mexican police and the Jalisco Department of Transportation; visual traffic signs; body language and sounds of traffic agents. Material will be sent by email prior to the class.
• A hands-on workshop on cocoa and Mexican table chocolate, conducted by local expert Nora Maldonado, is scheduled for Friday, November 13, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Education director Alfredo Pérez will provide insights on the country’s fascinating Day of the Dead customs at the workshop slated for Friday, October 30 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.
• In-person Spanish in Action instruction is held both mornings and afternoons every Thursday, beginning October 15.
• Online classes via Zoom on improving your Spanish pronunciation, advanced conversation and practical grammar offer 70 minutes of instruction. Language classes are limited to nine people.

Greeters posted just inside the main gate at 16 de Septiembre and Ramón Corona and the south entrance at the lakefront sign in visitors Monday to Friday. Use of face masks is required for admittance to the premises, with social distancing practices and frequent hand sanitization strongly encouraged.
Health update
Skin cancer screenings resume this month at the Lake Chapala Society. Screenings are held 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month.
Medical services are open to the public. During the Phase I opening of the LCS campus, no walk-ins will be allowed. Patients can call the LCS office or make an appointment in person in the office. The cutoff date for sign-ups is the Tuesday before the scheduled screening. The office personnel will assign appointments. The screening is free, but there will be a charge for treatment. The clinic is for skin cancer screenings and treatment only. For other dermatological concerns, contact the Riberas Medical Group to make an appointment with Dra. Ballesteros, 376-688-1244.
