Dr. Martha Coppelia Velez Hernandez presents “At the End, There is Still a Lot We Can Do” at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, August 22, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.
Nobody wants to die alone at an old age in intensive care. While we are healthy and totally aware, we can decide on our own in which way we want to be treated at the end of our lives. We must avoid the creation of false hopes which lead to “futile life support,” which results in unnecessary expenses for doctors and hospitals, in many cases causing pain and suffering without providing a basic quality of life. If we take the right decisions today, we can die with dignity in the future. We all will die someday. Many expect this moment to be kind of romantic, that we will close our eyes and not wake up again. Nevertheless, according to recent statistics, 80 percent of the population will suffer from a terminal illness. It could be a heart disease, illness of lungs, kidneys or the feared cancer.
Dr. Velez is a renowned anesthesiologist based in Guadalajara who has 20 years of experience in treating pain.
BBQ luncheon benefit
American Legion Post #9 will host a barbecue luncheon to benefit Mama Cleo’s Boys Home Saturday, August 28, 1 to 3 p.m. at Mama’s Musical Bar, Calle Gonzalez Gallo 86 in San Antonio Tlayacapan.
Mama Cleo’s Boys Home was founded in 2018 by Alex Bernardino and his mother, Cleo. Alex’s parents served for many years as volunteers for Love in Action, another local home for disadvantaged youths. Growing up in this environment Alex developed a strong desire to help others develop pathways for productive and successful adult lives.
The home currently houses 12 boys, ranging from 8 to 18 years of age. All of them are enrolled in regular school programs and receive in-house lessons in building character, integrity and spiritual development. They also attend vocational classes in carpentry, electricity and computer-aided design. They learn about community service by volunteering at the Ajijic recycling center.
The Legion is sponsoring the event in conjunction with Juan Mata of Ranger BBQ from El Salto and Mama’s Musical Bar. All proceeds from ticket sales, priced at 400 pesos per person, will directly benefit Mama Cleo’s Boys Home. The restaurant will run a cash bar during the luncheon.
The locale has ample space for diners to observe safe social distancing while enjoying their meals. Carry-out service will be available.
The Ranger BBQ restaurant and mobile kitchen is noted for its excellent barbecue menu, including brisket, pulled pork and sausage. Owner Juan Mata, a frequent and generous supporter of Lakeside charity events, will donate 100 percent of his meal costs to Mama Cleo’s Home.
Founded in 1997, American Legion Post # 9 has a long history of organizing philanthropic activities. Members currently meet on the first Thursday of every month, 10 a.m., at Mama’s Musical Bar.

Have Hammer Will Travel A.C. holds its weekly Bingo fundraiser at El Sombrero Restaurant, located just west of the Pemex station on the mountain side in Ajijic each Wednesday, 1 p.m. A bingo package of ten games is 200 pesos. All profits go to the charity which teaches Mexican youth (including the boys at Mama Cleo’s) life skills through woodworking and carpentry. There are no cash prizes, but you can win coupons for salons, tours, furniture made by the students and artwork by major local artists.
