Phil Rylett presents “Why are vaccines so controversial?” at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, August 29, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.

pg12aAre vaccines a victim of their success, or is there something that warrants the controversy today? Rylett will take a look at the history of vaccines and their rocky ride to the present. There was one case in recent history that spawned an entire movement of distrust. What was the story behind this particular case? Rylett will follow the science ... and the money.

Rylett has a degree in pharmacology and worked as a pharmacologist for several years.

The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) will hold its 5th annual tequila tasting Friday, September 10, 2:30 to 5 p.m. Try more than 30 different types of tequila offered by ten area distributors. Complimentary appetizers will be offered throughout the event. All tasting tequilas will be available for purchase. Tickets, 300 pesos, available at the LCS office or website.

The current wave of Covid-19 provoked by the Delta variant is overwhelming the small indigenous village of San Pedro Itzican on the northeast shore of Lake Chapala. The first wave took 30 lives in this village of about 5,000. Four more died between August 20-23 and many more are ill.

Poco a Poco San Pedro has stepped in to help by providing oxygen machines and also food for about 175 families. Currently, they are renting four machines at 4,000 pesos per month. The families receive a weekly despensa of rice, beans, lentils, soya and oatmeal at a total cost of 15,000 pesos per week. Each basic despensa costs 86 pesos.
