Open Circle
David Truly presents “The New Foreign Retirement Community: Making Room for Nomads and Refugees” at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, March 20, 10:30 a.m., at the Lake Chapala Society.
Truly first visited Ajijic in 1997 to conduct research for his dissertation on international retirement migration to the “Lake Chapala Riviera.” He later received his Ph.D. in geography from the University of South Carolina and taught at Central Connecticut State University, before returning to Ajijic in 2009 to raise his children. During this time, he taught at the Universidad Autonoma in Guadalajara and also consulted with various private and public groups on tourism and retirement developments. He has conducted numerous studies over the years and advised and collaborated with other students/researchers interested in the positive and negative impacts of international retirement migration.
Truly’s presentation focuses on socio-economic and political trends in society and their impact on foreign and local communities such as Ajijic and the surrounding Lake Chapala Riviera.
This presentation has typically been one of Open Circle’s largest.

SOS Dog Rescue
A silent auction will be held Sunday, March 20, 1 to 4 p.m. at the Centro Cultural Ajijic to support SOS Dog Rescue. Bid on art by Efren Gonzalez, Ken Gosh, Lizette Aguilar and other local artists, as well as locally made ceramics, baskets, other crafts, certificates from regional travel companies, restaurants, and hotels. Refreshments available and there will be an opportunity to visit with rescue dogs and the staff and volunteers who care for them.

Bikini Car Fest
The 13th annual Bikini Car Fest will be held at Parque de la Cristiania in Chapala, Sunday, March 20. Expect to see some of Mexico’s best funny cars and personalized autos, dozens of vendors of car tech, stereos etcetera.
Show girls from some of the metro area’s table dance clubs will be showing off their curves in bikinis, and a contest will also be held. A 50-peso entrance fee will be charged. Bring your souped up hot rod for exhibition for only 250 pesos, or 350 pesos to enter competition. Face masks obligatory.
Democrats Abroad
DA Lake Chapala continues its 9th annual Film Festival with films showing each Sunday, through April 24, 1:30 p.m. at Cinemagic in Plaza Bugambilias in Ajijic. Tickets are 150 pesos. Masks and proof of vaccination are required. All proceeds fund 2022 Lakeside U.S. voter assistance events.
Theology diploma
On Tuesday, March 22, 10 a.m. Lakeside Presbyterian Church is hosting an informational meeting (at the church) to those interested in a new class on “How to Study the Bible,” to be held at the Lakeside Institute of Theology. Salsa dancing
Steve Sayce gives beginning salsa lessons at American Legion Post 7 Chapala every Monday, 6 p.m. No partner required, but Sayce encourages leads to attend. Cost: 50 pesos.
Dine with the Shrine
Adelita Bar and Grill in San Antonio Tlayacapan will be the venue for a Dine with the Shrine luncheon Wednesday, March 23, from 1 to 4 p.m. The benefit event for the Lake Chapala Shrine Club is taking the place of the organization’s annual Ribfest, scrubbed for the third year running due to Covid-19 restrictions on large public gatherings.
Guests will have four menu options: a half-rack of Adelita’s mouth-watering BBQ ribs, pork tenderloin or chicken breast, all served with side dishes, or fettuccine Alfredo with chicken. First course choices are salad or minestrone soup. Cheesecake is offered for dessert. Dishes may also be ordered for carry-out or home delivery. The event will feature live entertainment for in-house diners.

Who Rescued Who?
This is the title of two books of tales about street dogs rescued by people in the Lake Chapala area ... or, perhaps they are books of tales told by dogs who rescued humans.

Get your fool’s hat on
Fools are wanted for the 5th annual April Fool’s benefit dinner for Tepehua Centro Comunitario, Friday, April 1, 2 to 5 p.m. at the Sunrise Restaurant in San Antonio. Wear a costume and win prizes. Cost of 450 pesos includes choice of chicken fajitas, shrimp salad, chiles rellenos or hamburger and fries. Margaritas, beer and wine available, along with entertainment and lots of laughs.
