Open Circle

pg12b

Virtuosi Guadalajara will perform a concert of works by Dimitri Shostakovich and Samuel Barber at the Lake Chapala Society Sunday, May 22, 10:30 a.m.

In about three months, Ajijic will be teeming with some 60 young violinists, cellists, pianists and violists from all over the world who will participate in the intensive two-week “Festival del Lago” workshop, to study closely with a highly skilled and experienced faculty.

A group of young talented Mexican students, 15 to 24 years old, who have been attending the festival since its inception, have formed an ensemble called Virtuosi Guadalajara. This conductor-less string orchestra consists of 16 violinists, violists and cellists,  led and coached by Christopher Wilshere, who is also their private musical instructor and the artistic director of Festival del Lago.

For Open Circle, the ensemble will perform two iconic works: arguably Shostakovich’s greatest and most terrifying composition, the famous “String Quartet #8” arranged for string orchestra, along with Samuel Barber’s beautiful “Adagio for Strings,” which grew in notoriety after it was used in the movie “Platoon.” Not only will the ensemble perform and discuss these works, but they will also pull back the curtain and illustrate the process and rehearsal techniques that they have developed.
