Noche Bohemia
The Rotary Club of Ajijic will hold a Bohemian Night as a fundraiser for polio prevention, Saturday, October 22, 6 to 10 p.m. at the Mexia Ranch, on the Libramiento. On the menu are drinks, dinner, great music, dance, fellowship and karaoke.

Scottish country dancing
The first few classes of the year will feature lots of easy dances for everyone to try. If you are reasonably active, want to keep fit in both body and mind, and Scottish music (not bagpipes) sets your toes tapping, this is an excellent class for you. We keep it low impact. No partners are required. No experience is necessary, but if you have done some contra or square dancing you might find some formations familiar. Running shoes are okay but a lighter more flexible sole is best.
This is the social dancing of Scotland, not the highland fling! We laugh a lot!

Open Circle
Keith Lindauer presents “Earthships and Rainwater Harvesting A Gateway to Sustainable Living,” Sunday, October 23, 10:30 a.m. at the next meeting of Open Circle at the Lake Chapala Society.
Earthships are off-grid homes constructed from recycled and repurposed materials generally discarded from society. Old car tires, glass bottles and aluminum cans are the primary building blocks of these homes. Powered by the sun, heated and cooled by the earth’s abundant and free energy sources, with all domestic water harvested from the rain and snowmelt, Earthships are affordable to build, attractive and perhaps the healthiest homes you can build.
Lindauer is a traditionally educated and trained architect gone rogue.
In 1996, after an encounter in Colorado with renegade New Mexico architect Mike Reynolds, aka the Garbage Warrior and father of the Earthship, his life took a left turn. He discovered Earthships and sustainable building, including straw bale houses, cob and adobe. The next 25 years was devoted to green building, planning and developing sustainable communities and off-grid homes across the Americas.
Lindauer is a soldier in Reynolds’ army and he will show you what Earthships are, how they are built and how and why they could change your life - and the environment - for the better.
Bucket list
The Lake Chapala Society’s Intercultural Celebration of Life and Honoring Death Festival, takes place Monday, October 24.
The LCS campus will be the venue for the “Before I Die Wall,” a large temporary display, constructed by the students at the Have Hammer program, where individuals can write personal bucket list goals, reflecting on mortality and things that matter most to put their dreams into words.
Inspired by artist Candy Chang, it will be among more than 5,000 Before I Die walls created around the world, and the tenth one in Mexico.
Trivia to feed the soul
As part of its Million Peso Donation Challenge, FoodBank Lakeside will hold a Music Trivia Night at Mama’s Musical Bar in San Antonio Tlayacapan, Wednesday, October 26.
Get your team of up to six people together who know music from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, choose a name and buy your tickets. The cost of 300 pesos includes a meal. US Consulate visit
Staff from the United States Consulate in Guadalajara will hold a town hall meeting with U.S. citizens on Thursday, October 27, 10 a.m., at the Lake Chapala Society. Representatives from the consulate’s American Citizens Services, Regional Security and Federal Benefits units will be on hand to share information and answer questions of general interest. Specific personal matters may be addressed with consular officials after the meeting. Register in advance through the RSVP links posted on the lakechapalasociety.com website. You will be required to show a photo ID for admission to the event.
Chapala Birders
Thursday, October 27, the Lake Chapala Birders will meet at 8:15 a.m. at the Old Train Station in Chapala, leaving immediately to bird the Pumping Station area, east of Chapala. Expect to see a good variety of land and shore birds in a variety of habitats. The group will bird until 10:15 a.m. and then go for breakfast to La Palapa de Don Juan in Chapala. LCS Health Day
The Lake Chapala Society will hold a Health Day Friday, October 28, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the south campus patio.
Registration and prepayment for the flu vaccine will take place on Tuesday, October 25, and Wednesday, October 26, for LCS members only.
Open registration for non-members of the LCS will be Thursday, October 27, subject to the availability of flu shots.
Sign up and pay (cash only) in the LCS office. Membership must be current through the registration process.
The flu shot is quadrivalent—a 4 Strain shot. The cost is 750 pesos.
Shots will be administered by Lidia Zamudio, under the direction of Dr. Carlos Garcia.
Halloween fun
Los Güeros Lake Chapala motorcycle club is putting on a Texas BooBQ, Saturday, October 29, 3 p.m. at American Legion Post 7 Chapala as a fundraiser in support of the 9th annual Lake Chapala Toy Run. Food provided by Juan Mata and Rangers BBQ, Don’t miss Doug’s exceptional Margarita bar and the live music by The Dead Güeros Band. Come in your best Halloween costume. An on-site makeup artist will be available. Tickets, 500 pesos, are available at the Iron Horse Saloon, The American Legion and from Los Güeros members.
Spooky stuff for kids
As part of the LCS Intercultural Celebration of Life and Honoring Death Festival, a children’s movie night will be held Saturday, October 29, with two feature films dubbed in Spanish with English subtitles at the Wilkes Education Center, Calle Galeana 18. “The Book of Life,” followed by a discussion, 4-6 p.m.; “Beetlejuice,” showing for teenagers, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Treats will be available. Limited space, 40 free tickets for each movie offered for pickup at the Wilkes Center or LCS. A Halloween party for children will be held the next day, Sunday, October 30, 2 to 5 p.m. at the LCS campus. Scheduled are games, pumpkin carving, science experiments, music, and a costume contest, with snacks and beverages. 100 tickets are free for pickup at LCS or the Wilkes Center.
