We’re moving

The Guadalajara Reporter office in Ajijic’s Plaza Bugambilias is moving down the hall this weekend (if all goes according to plan).

Our new location is closer to the parking garage, in front of Chopsticks restaurant.

Open Circle

“What LCS means to me” is the presentation at the next meeting of Open Circle, Sunday, March 12, 10:30 a.m. at the Lake Chapala Society.

Everyone has a different point of view, and that diversity of opinions is something that enriches us as a community. All are invited to hear the vision of Alfredo Perez, Director of Education; Diana Ayala, Development Director; Domitzu Medrano, Communication Coordinator; and Sandra Gutiérrez, Spanish teacher.

Registration is strongly encouraged. Reserve at opencircleajijic.org

Chapala Birders

• Tuesday March 14, the Lake Chapala Birders will meet at 8:15 a.m. at El Bajio on the west side of Ajijic. We will walk down the lane to the lake, expecting to see a good variety of birds in the tall trees and fields. At about 10 a.m. the group will head to Fonda Dona Lola for breakfast and review the bird list.

How to get there: From Ajijic go about two miles west from the light at Colon, turn downhill for El Bajio (across from the west end of El Pueblito) and park immediately on the lateral road parallel to the Carretera.

Bird walks are open to all those interested in birds, both beginners and experienced birders. Just bring binoculars. There are always knowledgeable birders on hand to identify the species.

• A member of the Lake Chapala Kayak Club is offering to take out birders, one or two at a time, to go out to see, close up, the swallows and other bird species in the reeds along the lakeshore. This would be on a Saturday or Thursday with the club. Departure will be at 8 a.m. Bring water and water shoes as you must step into 12 inches of water to get into the kayak. The club asks for a donation of 400 pesos per guest. Breakfast with the club afterwards at the Bonanza Restaurant. Contact Wayne Renz, 376 766 1860.

Lakeside Freethinkers

John de Waal will chair an in-person meeting of the Lakeside Freethinkers Wednesday, March 15, 3 p.m.  The question for discussion is: “How much longer can we survive on our planet?”

The world population in 1970 was 3.7 billion. By 2020 it had grown to 7.8 billion, an increase of over 100 percent in 50 years. We are growing at a rate of over 80,000,000 a year. Humans have become so dominant that we take up almost all the space there is, directly or indirectly. It should be clear to all that, if we keep growing at this rate, we are headed for disaster.

How can we avoid this disaster? Who decides who will live and who will die? We must remember that this planet is our home and the only one we have.
