Open Circle

Michael Hogan  presents “Deaf Cat in the Rain” at the next meeting of Open Circle at the Lake Chapala Society, on Sunday, November 10, 10:30 a.m. 

A sometimes humorous and sometimes poignant series of stories presented by this well-known author illuminating some of the missteps and joys of living and working in Mexico from his latest book, “The Michael Hogan Reader.”

pg16aHogan is an historian, author and poet who has lived in Mexico for 35 years. He has written 30 books, including “The Irish Soldiers of Mexico,” which was the basis for an MGM movie. His short stories and essays have appeared in numerous magazines from the Paris Review and Harvard Review to the Smithsonian. Penguin Books includes his work in the college text, 100 Great Essays.

Remembrance Day

ANAVETS Mexico Unit 19 will hold a ceremony honoring all who paid the ultimate sacrifice and those who have served their countries, Monday, November 11, 10:30 a.m. at Mama’s Musical Bar, Gonzalez Gallo 86 in San Antonio.

Quilt Guild

The Ajijic Quilt Guild will meet November 14 at 10 a.m. They will be gathering at the clubhouse of the Chapala Country Club, located east of Chapala, and just east of San Nicolas de Ibarra.

Anyone with an interest in quilting, sewing, embroidery or any other craft pursuit is welcome to attend.

During the gathering there will be a demonstration on how to quickly and easily make a “hands free” binding for a quilt. There will also be a show-and-tell of the quilts and other sewn items made by Guild members.  

The Guild meets at 10 a.m. on the second Thursday of every month at the Chapala Country Club.

Eco Justice

Author Cindy McCulligh presents her book, “Sewer of Progress: Corporations, Institutionalized Corruption and the Struggle for the Santiago River,” an analysis of Mexico’s ecological regulatory systemic faults at the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera (CCAR) Friday, November 15, 6 p.m. She will describe how government interest in progress and development have allowed industries to continue dumping contaminants into rivers and landfills despite promises of corporate social responsibility. She will expose the powerful relationships that put public health and ecosystem protection at risk. McCulligh is an investigator/professor at CIESSAS Occidente and a renowned specialist in ecological justice. Free entrance.

Pride Festival

Ajijic Cares Foundation will be participating in the 2024 Chapala Pride Festival on Saturday, November 16.  They will take  part in the parade and Executive Director Mitsu Zapata will deliver a speech

Flavors of Jocotepec

The municipal government of Jocotepec is sponsoring a recipe contest for residents with prize money of 4,000 pesos to be split between the first three winners. Inscription is through November 14. Kings’ Gambit

The Huaraches Club invites the community to participate in the 6th annual Los Maestros del Lago Chess Tournament, Sunday, November 17, at the Lake Chapala Society. Categories include children, adolescents, amateurs and open, to compete for a 30,000-peso pool. Registration is open through November 12, 6 p.m. at bit.ly/registrohuarachess.

Chapala Birders

Monday, November 18, the Lake Chapala Birders will meet a 8 a.m. at the “Sculpture” in La Floresta, leaving immediately for Las Trojes (one hour away), to hike the Horizontal Oak Forest Trail. The group will hike to the edge of the hidden valley (three hours hiking uphill, two hours back). Don’t expect very many birds, but the hike is very pleasant and you may see the red-faced warbler. Return to Ajijic is about 4 p.m. Bring refreshments and sandwiches for lunch at noon at the top. Bird walks are open to all those interested in birds, both beginners and experienced birders. Just bring binoculars. There are always knowledgeable birders on hand to identify the species.

Home tours

Tickets for the Behind the Walls home tours, which benefit the School for Special Children in Jocotepec, are now on sale at Fenix Realty, La Bella Vida, and Make It Cash. Tour dates are November 21, December 12, January 23, February 20, and March 13. Individual tickets are 350 pesos, or save 200 pesos with a season ticket for 1,550 pesos.

Each tour features four beautiful homes in the Ajijic area, and drivers can be requested at the time of ticket purchase. Tickets must be presented to enter the homes. Tours begin near the pier at the third parking lot west of the end of Colón, close to the playground, at 10:15 a.m. and end by 1 p.m.

Health Fair

The Garden of Dreams Boutique Hotel is sponsoring a Health and Wellbeing Fair, Saturday, November 23, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Constitucion 105 in Ajijic.
