World Cup commotion
Opening day action in the FIFA World Cup drew a throng of soccer fans to the Public Viewing Dome set up at the Conekta entertainment area near the Chapala Malecón.
Elated visitors jumped up and cheered wildly as Mexico scored the first of two goals in a win over South Africa. The module offers free admission and ample seating for viewing live transmissions of all of the Copa Mundial games broadcast from Canada, the United States and within this country.
Chili Cookoff at Post 7

Open Circle
Amma Thanasanti presents “Meditation and Inquiry: Learning to Meet Experience More Deeply” on Sunday, June 21, 10:30 a.m. at Open Circle at the Lake Chapala Society.
Meditation is often associated with relaxation or stress reduction. But many contemplative traditions also include inquiry — and inquiry is something altogether different. Inquiry is a portal. It can move us from absorption in experience to resting in the awareness that holds it. It reveals what is hard to see alone. And in relationship, it becomes a form of intimacy — moving quickly past the surface of daily life to what is actually alive between two people. When meditation and inquiry work together, something becomes possible that neither offers alone: not just greater calm, but genuine recognition — of oneself, of others, and of the luminous presence that is always already here.
Thanasanti has meditated for over 45 years and has taught internationally since 1996. She spent 26 years as a Theravada Buddhist nun and is the founder of Awakening Truth, an organization dedicated to making contemplative practice genuinely healing.

• ANAVETS Mexico Unit 19 will hold a Canada Day celebration on Wednesday, July 1, 1 p.m. at La Palapa del Guayabo on Chapala’s Malecon. • The Canadian Veterans Support Association hosts its annual Canada Day party, July 1, 2 to 5 p.m. at El Pilar Bistro, Carretera 261 in Riberas del Pilar. Music will be by the Crooners Blue Cadillac. July 4th celebrations
• The American Legion in Chapala has planned a day of activities and food for its July 4th celebration. It’s not a two-hour come, eat and leave — you may come anytime and leave anytime between 1 and 9 p.m. The meal is a buffet by Rangers BBQ with ribs and brisket, corn on the cob, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, rolls and dessert for 400 pesos. If you just want to come and listen to music (Sweet Harmony from 1 to 3 p.m.; Ricardo and Blanca from 4 to 6 p.m. and WO from 7 to 9 p.m.), the cost is only 100 pesos. No advance ticket sales; pay at the door.

Volunteers needed
The Recycle Bookstore, a community asset offering an extensive selection of reading material in multiple languages, is putting out a call for volunteers to help keep its shelves stocked and its doors open. Volunteers are needed for 2.5-hour shifts just one day per week. As a thank-you, helpers can take home books by favorite authors.
Pickleball
At the Raquet Club courts in San Juan Cosala, meet for no-pressure pickleball every Wednesday and Friday, 5 to 7 p.m. The cost is 100 pesos per person.
Sing in the sunset
Scott Grace plays 1960s and ‘70s music on his guitar and invites everyone to sing along every Saturday, 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ajijic sign on the Malecon.
Food needed
The Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center in Jocotepec takes care of over 60 men, and they are in desperate need of food. If you can help, bring food or cash donations to Mama’s Musical Bar in San Antonio on Thursday, June 25, between noon and 2 p.m.
