You will not be seeing Charlie Klestadt out and about selling tickets for the upcoming Cruz Roja Luau at all his usual hangouts. But do not worry, while Charlie is recovering from his injuries sustained in a hit-and-run accident on June 2, we have the next best thing – “Charlie’s Friends.” The wonderful residents in our community have banded together to make sure that ticket sales will go on.

Celebration of life

Elizabeth (Betty) Schrader passed away on Sunday, June 9. A celebration of her life and service to the lakeside community will take place on Monday, June 17, 2 p.m. in the Bill Schrader gazebo at the Lake Chapala Society. All are welcome. Her obituary will be published in next week’s edition.

Trivia players will be excited about the Third Annual Trivial Pursuit Championship will be held on Wednesdays, June 19, June 26, July 3 and July 10, at 4 p.m. at Café Magaña in Riberas del Pilar.

Up to four people are permitted per team. The entry fee is 50 pesos per night or 150 pesos to play the entire tournament.

Favorite tournament fare will be onion rings and cheap booze.

Form a team, register with Magaña owner Jeffery and have some fun.

The Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post Seven will hold a Chicken Parmesan Dinner, Thursday, June 13 at the post (Morelos 114, Chapala).

Laguna Chapalac - May 25, 2013

American Legion Post 7 (Morelos 114, Chapala) will hold a Memorial Day ceremony and picnic on Monday, May 27.

The ceremony will begin at 12:30 p.m., cocktails at 1 p.m. and the picnic at 2 p.m. The menu will be pit roasted pig, corn on the cob, broccoli salad, garlic toast and ice cream floats. Live music will be provided by Ricardo and Blanca. Veterans get one free drink. Tickets are 150 pesos (advance sales only). Call the Legion at 765-2259.

Laguna Chapalac - May 18, 2013

The back patio of Lake Chapala Society hummed with congratulations and feelings of pride and accomplishment on May 4, as more than 180 students of Lake Chapala Society’s English as a Second Language (ESL) program received recognition and certificates.

Having successfully completed nine months of study, the students, ranging in age from 15 to 70, gathered, along with family and friends for a ceremony acknowledging their efforts. 

LCS Executive Director Terry Vidal  and ESL Program Director Inez Dayer welcomed the participants and offered their congratulations. Volunteer expatriate ESL teachers, who conduct the English classes, presented the students with their certificates of completion. Teachers, students and family members mingled and interacted over refreshments after the formal program.

Students will register for the coming year’s classes August 12 to 16 at the LCS Wilkes Education Center in Ajijic.
