Piks Club opens

A new store, resembling a smaller version of a Sam’s Club or Costco, has opened for business just south of Bucerias.

The Piks Club “warehouse store” is located in front of the Mega supermarket on Highway 200.

According to co-owner Ricardo Viso, it is the prototype model of a smaller warehouse store chain, mixing the variety and prices of the larger Costco-type stores with the convenience and personal service of the corner store.

While a normal warehouse store would have 4,000 or more SKU’s, Piks Club will start out with about 1,000, says merchandise manager Juan Jose Diaz.

The business plan includes building five more Piks Clubs next year in areas where there is a sizeable population of full- and part-time foreigners, such as Lake Chapala/Ajijic and San Miguel Allende.

The company which owns Piks Club (as well as WOW Dollar Stores in Mexico) went from concept to physical location and stock in about six weeks, so it is “a work in progress,” says Viso. “We’ve had to guess what was important to stock right away to get the store off the ground. So we are learning as we go what our customers want us to carry.”

Much of their stock comes from a friendly business relationship between Piks Club and Costco, where items are purchased at wholesale prices for resale to the public.

“We want to hear from our customers what items we should stock,” says Viso.

In addition to an in-store “suggestion box,” staff are developing a Piks Club website, where customers can place orders from their own PC for home delivery. Viso also wants to locate more items from the United States, where he spends part of his time.

The store is open every day from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

For the grand opening of Piks Club, a parking lot cook-out will be held on Saturday, January 7, from 5-8 p.m., to introduce the store and management to the public.

Taste of La Cruz

Amigos de La Cruz and the La Cruz Marina Riviera Nayarit have joined forces to sponsor A Taste of La Cruz – a day of fun, food and music.

The event, free and open to the public, is on Saturday, January 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Marina Malecon and Amphitheater –  “one of the Bahia’s most picturesque settings,” boasts the organizers.

“Meet the people, merchants, restaurants and musicians of La Cruz de Huanacaxtle at this exciting expo-fair and find out what makes La Cruz the crown jewel of the Riviera Nayarit,” says Landon Hollander, one of the event coordinators.

The La Cruz showcase promises to feature all the premiere enterprises in town, eager to show you more about their business and service. Over 35 local vendors have agreed to participate so far.

Restaurants that will be offering samples from their menus include; Black Forest, El Coleguita, Ensamble Wine Bar & Tapas, Eva’s Brickhouse, Falconi Pizza, Frascati, Galvez Restaurante, Oso’s Oyster Bar and Seafood Market Restaurant, Pacifica, Philo’s, La Placita, Trio Restaurant Sandzibar, Tortuga Beach, El Violli and Vista Hermosa.

“Visitors will be able to stroll on the Marina Malecon and groove to the tunes of La Cruz musicians,” says Hollander.

The Marina Riviera Nayarit will also have an open house to show off their VIP Lounge, Ikuai Palapa Restaurant, Sailor Pub and Taikai Skybar.

Organizers promise this will be a day to remember and a great way to start the new year.

Directions to Marina Riviera Nayarit: from Highway 200, take the La Cruz/Punta de Mita Highway, enter the lateral, turn left at the stoplight and continue down the hill past the main plaza to the Marina entrance.
