Monthly beach cleanup
Everyone loves a nice, clean beach. And Bucerias has a beautiful, long and uncrowded beach. While trash cans are provided at most of the access points, not all the garbage makes it to the proper place.
The second Saturday of each month, Amigos de Bucerias participates in a beach cleanup along with volunteers from other local organizations and businesses, coordinated by the Riviera Nayarit Convention and Visitors Bureau.
This month the cleanup is on Saturday, November 11. The meeting point is the El Buzo statue near the Bucerias plaza. Everyone is welcome to come and help. Bring water to drink, bags and wear comfortable clothes.
In a pickle?
Residents of La Cruz and Bucerias are taking up a sport with the odd name of pickleball.
Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis, and is fun to play and easy to learn.
Clinics for beginners will be conducted by an experienced coach, Johnny Davalos, starting Thursday, November 2, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Covering the basics of strokes and strategies, the clinics cost 100 pesos per session, but space is limited. Rackets are provided. Clinics will be on-going, so don’t worry if you missed the first one.
Private lessons and packages are available for both pickleball and tennis.

Artful ambling
In November 1996, artist Christy Beguesse arrived in Bucerias. She had heard a lot about the Puerto Vallarta Art Walk so went to take a look.
“I loved it,” says Beguesse. “What a great way to show off the galleries and have fun. I realized then that in Bucerias we had 13 galleries in just three blocks along Lazaro Cardenas, so I thought ‘let’s do this here.’”
She adds: “But I was new in town and the idea was poo-pooed with comments like the cobblestones are too rough, not enough lights, it’s not been done before. So I kept the idea in my head until the next season when I had my gallery up and running.”
Flyers were made, galleries were invited to participate and the Bucerias Art Walk was born.
Fast forward to 2017 and the Bucerias Art Walk is ready to start its second decade. Beguesse says there is great interest from galleries, shops and restaurants wanting to participate.
The Bucerias Art Walk takes place from 7-9 p.m. each Thursday along Lazaro Cardenas, from the beginning of November until Easter. There is no charge to the galleries and shops. At the Art Walk Plaza, Beguesse has space for artists and non-profit groups to set up in her well-lit patio. Space is limited so contact her early.
A new feature this year is a map of the Bucerias Art Walk. Sponsored by Timothy Real Estate, Marks Bar and Grill, Sandrinas and Karen’s Place, the map highlights where “art walkers” might find some good food and interesting artwork. Seasonal markets
Artisanal and organic tianguis (markets) are attractive shopping alternatives for domestic and foreign tourists visiting the Riviera Nayarit area during the winter season. These markets take place in many of the towns dotted along the Pacific coast – from Nuevo Vallarta to Chacala. They showcase the best local and regional products and handicrafts.
Almost all these small markets start in November and end in April or early May of the following year.
Nuevo Vallarta (Riviera Farmer’s Market).
Beginning Tuesday, November 7, this market located in the parking lot behind the Nuevo Vallarta Business Center, overlooking Marina Nuevo Vallarta, is in its third year. Visitors will find an assortment of clothing, jewelry and home décor items, as well as artisanal bread, prepared foods to eat on the spot or take home, cultivated exotic flowers, vegetables and more on Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. See facebook.com/solvirgenbio.
Nuevo Vallarta (Quiosco Artisanal Tianguis).
This open-air market offers clothing, food, flowers, fresh local products, artisanal products, candies, glassware, watercolors, gifts and live music. Located in the Marina Nuevo Vallarta, the market is open every Saturday, November through April, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the plaza, close to the traditional kiosk it owes its name to. Bucerias Forever Spring.
On Wednesdays, the Forever Spring Market is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the north end of Bucerias Centro at Avenida Mexico. It offers Mexican specialties handmade by locals: gourmet food, arts and crafts, leather goods, home goods, rugs and more. See facebook.com/foreverspringfarmersmarket.
La Cruz de Huanacaxtle (La Cruz Market).
“Going to the market” on Sundays is taken seriously in this popular town since the opening of the La Cruz Market, which draws large crowds weekly.
Located in the Marina Riviera Nayarit next to the Mercado del Mar, it’s also known as the Tianguis Huanacaxtle and is a great place to spend a couple of hours between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., browsing rows of stalls selling a variety of handmade products, organic fruit and vegetables, cheeses, cured meats, traditional clothing and much more. New this year is the La Tienda La Cruz, located at Carretera a Punta Mita Km. 1.5 La Puntilla, in La Cruz. The hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays you´ll find the shop at the market. The idea is to offer some of the products from the Sunday market and from other producers that cannot always be there because of the lack of space. Sayulita (Mercado del Pueblo).
This tianguis was born of the noble desire to promote sustainable farming and nutrition among locals, giving small family growers a space to sell their products for home consumption.
This is the only farmer’s market in Sayulita, open only during the winter season, from November through April. It’s located on Calle Revolucion in the heart of this Pueblo Magico.
Visitors will find an extensive variety of organic products, yoghurt, cheese, bread, coffee, baked goods, pesto sauces, soups, natural pet food, soaps, lotions and much more. Open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. See mercadodelpueblo.org.
San Pancho (Mercado del Sol).
The San Pancho Mercado del Sol has grown every year since it began three years ago. The market runs on Tuesdays during the winter, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Fresh fruits and vegetables, home-cooked food, art objects and other items are made by San Pancho residents. Lo de Marcos (Lo de Marcos Tianguis).
2017 marks the fourth season for this Saturday tianguis that welcomes visitors as of November 4.
The Lo de Marcos market is located in a charming patio that offers visitors a comfortable open-air experience for shopping and socializing, with good food, live music and plenty of vendors selling unique products. Shoppers can find handmade articles, homemade baked goods, salsas, piñatas, blown-glass figurines, fresh vegetables and more.
The market takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.
A Black-and-White issue
The Amigos de La Cruz (amigosdelacruz.org) annual “welcome back” event is scheduled for Friday, December 8.
This year’s Black & White Masked Gala takes place at a surprise location – partiers will meet at the La Cruz Marina entrance at 5 p.m.
The evening will include dinner, music for dancing by Huanacaxtle Musical, a live auction, roulette and a 50-50 drawing. Tickets cost 850 pesos per person and are available online.
