The 43 musicians in the Jalisco State Band (Banda de Musica del Estado de Jalisco) have not been idle since the start of the pandemic.
However, torn from their normal routine of two free concerts weekly in the iconic kiosk in the center of Guadalajara’s Plaza de Armas, musicians so accustomed to interacting with loyal fans could hardly have been content staying at home for months and using their phones to record themselves giving solo presentations in order to justify their paycheck from the Secretary of Culture.
That changed a few weeks ago, when Banda Director Germán Gutierrez Manzo and one of the group’s instrumentalists, Edgar Estrada, decided to bring the state’s oldest musical institution fully into the 21st century—courtesy of the pandemic. The two, along with other collaborators, recently produced video-recordings of Band concerts, accomplished by the musicians all playing at the same time while sealed up in their individual homes.
