Local voting groups update ballot mailing help schedule

U.S. voters in Mexico who requested their ballots for the November 3, 2020, election should receive them by email by Saturday at the latest. And voters who hail from most states can and should return their marked ballots electronically (by email or state webpages), say local activists.

pg3But about 20 states require voted ballots to be returned the old fashioned way, according to state rules recently in flux due to the pandemic and other hurdles. Some states with large populations, such as Texas, New York, Illinois, Ohio and Pennsylvania are in this “snail mail” group.

Luckily, these mandated snail-mailers can get help by using local Voting Assistance Officers, who are certified by the Department of Defense and will ferry voters’ sealed envelopes to the U.S. Consulate in Guadalajara.

“U.S. citizens in the Guadalajara area appreciate being able to rely on the consulate to help them get their ballots to the U.S. in time to be counted,” said Voting Assistance Officer Emily Raskin Perey.
