On Sunday, September 27, Guadalajara city hall will hand out 25,000 free tortas ahogadas in the heart of downtown, continuing a tradition that began in 2022.
Torta Ahogada Day takes place along the Paseo Fray Antonio Alcalde, between Morelos and Juarez, across from the Plaza de Armas. The free tortas will be distributed from 10 a.m. until supplies last. Beyond the free food, the celebration will feature live entertainment and activities throughout the day.
For the uninitiated, a torta ahogada is a distinctly Guadalajara creation. It consists of a birote salado — a salted bread roll unique to this region — stuffed with shredded pork carnitas, often with a layer of refried beans, then “drowned” in a spicy tomato-based salsa and topped with raw or pickled onions and a squeeze of lime.
