Tour historic San Juan Cosala

Best known today for its waterfront seafood restaurants and thermal water spas, San Juan Cosala was a burgeoning native settlement called Cuzatlan when Spanish conquistadores arrived in the Lake Chapala region around 1524.

You can discover San Juan’s rich history, landmark sights and modern day points of interest during a walking tour of the village scheduled for Saturday, April 27.

English-speaking guide Gerardo Tolentino will lead the tour, setting out from the town plaza, situated opposite the San Juan Parish, at 10 a.m. The itinerary begins with stops at El Hospitalito, lakeside’s oldest standing church, and the lakefront Malecon for a chat on local history going back to the pre-Hispanic era.

Other highlights include a visit to a bakery that produces Tachihual bread,a 400-year-old regional culinary specialty, along with a refreshment break at Viva Mexico Restaurant and peeks inside several art galleries. The journey ends at back at the plaza where the tour group will be invited to sample treats from a Mexican buffet, take in live entertainment and meander through a crafts fair.

Tickets, priced at 150 pesos person, are on sale at Viva Mexico, Porfirio Diaz 92, located a block and a half west of the plaza. They may also be acquired by contacting Tolentino (cel.) 331-737-7913 or John Mestrik, tel. (387) 761-0041 or (cel.) 331-251-8595.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the San Juan soccer league and other sports groups geared for local youth.
