Tapatio F1 driver has career-defining win

Guadalajara Formula One driver Sergio “Checo” Perez achieved the greatest triumph of his career, negotiating the narrow streets and tight curves of Monte Carlo ahead of his rivals to win the Monaco Grand Prix, regarded as the “blue ribbon” race of the competition.

pg24aVictory moved Perez, of the Red Bull team, to just 15 points behind teammate Jan Verstappen in the F1 standings after seven races.

Despite its prestigious status, the Monaco Grand Prix is arguably the dullest on the F1 calendar, since overtaking on the tortuous street circuit is complicated. Perez found himself in the lead after 20 laps thanks to some smart tire changes by his team, and he never relinquished it until the checkered flag.

Perez, 32, who made his F1 debut 11 years ago, struggled to hold back tears as a military band played the Mexican national anthem, prior to receiving his race trophy from Prince Albert of Monaco.

Perez said that after his home grand prix in Mexico, Monaco is the one he coveted most of all. Monaco was his third F1 win, after Shakir in 2020 and Azerbaijan in 2021.
