Runners must get early wake-up call for GDL marathon

Around 6,000 runners are expected to participate in the annual Guadalajara Marathon on Sunday, November 6.

The race starts at 6:35 a.m. (6:30 a.m. for elite athletes) from the Hospicio Cabañas, following a route taking in famous landmarks, including the Plaza de la Bandera (kilometer 9), Niños Héroes Glorieta (kilometer 15), Arcos del Milenio (kilometers 18 and 32), Puente Matute Remus (kilometer 33) and Minerva Glorieta (kilometer 38), finishing at the Guadalajara Palacio Municipal. All these spots are good viewing locations.

Depending on the zone, road closures are scheduled between 5:40 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The total prize money on offer is 1.7 million pesos ($US86,000).  The winners should cross the finish line between 8:30 and 9 a.m.

In keeping with recent races, African athletes are expected to fill the top positions in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The record time is 2:12.28 in the men’s category and 2:29:44 in the women’s.
