It went to Game 7, but the Astros de Jalisco crossed the finish line, winning their third Cibacopa (Pacific League) championship in four years on an emotion-packed evening Tuesday in Guadalajara.
A day earlier, in Game 6, the Tijuana Zonkeys pulled off an astonishing victory, clinching a last-second win. However, the heartbreak of that loss didn’t deter the Astros players or their fans. The 3,500-seat arena was packed on both nights, creating a loud and highly charged atmosphere. The final score of 90-77 reflected the Astros’ dominance.
With this win, the Astros add to their 2022 and 2023 championships, further cementing their position as one of the league’s top franchises. Only the Rayos de Hermosillo have won more, with four championships.
The standout player of the night for the Astros was Finals MVP Harvey Grant, who contributed 20 points and six rebounds.
The Astros celebrated with their fans Wednesday evening at the Chapalita/Minerva Glorieta (?). The players, however, won’t have much time to savor their triumph or party, as the Astros will return to the court in the 14-team Mexican Professional Basketball League (LNBP), which kicks off its season on July 3. The Astros’ first game is scheduled for July 10 on the road, with home games on July 18, 19, 23 and 24.
