Chivas one step from final, but forced to relocate for semi final home leg

The Guadalajara Chivas are just one game away from the Liga Mx Clausura 2026 final.

After advancing past Tigres of Monterrey in the quarterfinals, the Chivas are facing Cruz Azul in the semifinals. The first leg played out on Wednesday, May 13 at Mexico City’s 80,000-capacity Banorte Stadium (formerly known as the Azteca), when the two evenly matched teams battled to an exciting 2-2 tie.

The decisive return leg, scheduled for Saturday, May 16, 7 p.m., will not be played at Chivas’ usual home, Estadio Akron. Instead, the team will host the match at the historic Estadio Jalisco — their home until 2010 — after FIFA this week took control of the Akron as part of the World Cup preparations.

Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro explained that FIFA requires a one-kilometer perimeter around the stadium, including all surrounding facilities, to be handed over a month before the tournament begins. The first game is on June 11.

The city’s other Liga Mx team, Atlas, was eliminated in the quarterfinals, losing to Cruz Azul.  The second Liga Mx semifinal pits Pumas against Pachuca.
