American School celebrates art with auction & lively Saturday festival

The American School in Guadalajara is inviting artists, art lovers, the school community and the public in general to its annual Art Fest on Saturday, March 7.

pg4The aim of this popular event is to celebrate the importance of art within the school and to promote the culture of art within the city.

For the uninitiated, Art Fest offers a chance to experience art in a more casual setting. Dozens of well-known local artists will set up stalls to display and sell their works at discounted prices, and also be available to chat with passers-by. An additional display area will show the best selected works by students of the American School, also available for purchase.

The festival will run all day from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and feature a smorgasbord of international food booths, as well as an array of top-class music and theatrical performances.

pg4bOn the evening before the festival, the school is auctioning off more than 50 works from both local and well-known national artists, including Luis Valsoto, Toni Guerra, Alejandro Colunga, Francisco Toledo, Gabriel Orozco, Jose Luis Cuevas and Miguel Castro Leñero. These artists generously donate a work of art to the school to raise money for its various charity projects.

The auction will be held at Espacio 1500, Avenida de las Américas 1254. Auction tickets cost 200 pesos and can be purchased at http://bit.ly/39xN8JD. Prospective buyers  who want a preview of the works up for auction, bios of the artists, and starting prices, can go online to http://bit.ly/2P2Rxwj.

This year’s invited artist is Gonzalo Lebrija, one of Mexico’s most celebrated abstract artists who has exhibited extensively throughout Europe, the United States and Latin America. His multi-media approach toward art has become highly regarded due to his ability to simultaneously employ painting, photography, sculpture, combined often into one exhibition or series of work. Lebrija is co-founder and co-director of OPA, Oficina de Proyecto de Arte, in Guadalajara.

Art Fest 2020 takes place on Saturday, March 7 at the American School campus (Colomos 2100, Col. Italia Providencia, near the Lopez Mateos and Americas intersection).

This is a great day out – expats love it – and the chances are you’ll go home with a great piece of art without breaking the bank!
