Photographer assaulted by downtown street vendors

A photographer with El Universal newspaper was attacked by street vendors in the Guadalajara city center after they believed he was taking images of their work.

“They beat me, they kicked me, they stole my cell phone and broke a lens,” said Carlos Zepeda, who was taking photos at the intersection of Pedro Moreno and Galeana. “I even showed them the images so they could see that I was photographing something else.”

Following the incident, fellow photojournalists staged a small demonstration outside the governor’s palace, demanding greater protection from authorities as they go about their work. Although police officers searched for the perpetrators of the assault, they could not be located.
