‘Canelo’ eases to victory; wants next fight on home soil

Guadalajara pugilist Saul “Canelo” Alvarez cemented his credentials as the world’s finest boxer after inflicting a punishing defeat on British challenger Callum Smith in San Antonio, Texas last weekend.

Alvarez unified the WBA and WBC super-middleweight belts, easily outscoring his opponent in the 12-round bout. This was the first fight of 2020 for the 30-year-old Guadalajara-born star, who has now dispatched six British fighters in his career.

According to Alvarez’s management, his next opponent is likely to be Turkish boxer Avni Yildirim, with the Tapatio keen to stage the fight on home soil in Guadalajara, hopefully next February.
