The Jalisco Human Rights Commission (CEDHJ) has opened an investigation into the deaths of 12 elderly people at a Guadalajara care home, supposedly all from Covid-19.
The rights group is trying to ascertain what kind of containment measures were implemented at the Asilo San José in Colonia Seattle after an employee became infected with the virus in December. A nun who was regular visitor to the home has also reportedly died.
The Jalisco Health Department has not issued a statement on the outbreak at the care home, which has been in quarantine for the past few weeks.
The home is one of many in the Guadalajara metropolitan area that CEDHJ staff checked on in April 2020, to ensure that appropriate precautions were being taken to safeguard residents as the coronavirus pandemic engulfed Mexico.
Guadalajara’s nursing homes are currently around 70 percent full, housing some 1,500 elderly residents, CEDHJ health coordinator Jazmid de la Torre Méndez told local reporters after visiting the San José home this week.
Since the axing of the Jalisco Social Assistance Institute (IJAS) by the current state administration, care homes have been operating with scant supervision, she admitted.
