Metro-area municipalities get tough on Covid rule violators

Inspectors in Guadalajara and Zapopan – the two largest municipalities of the metropolitan area, accounting for more than two-thirds of its population – worked overtime during the first period of the year’s Covid-19 restrictions (botón de emergencia) between January 16 and 31.

pg4Inspectors from Guadalajara’s Department of Inspection and Vigilance visited 6,393 businesses during this period, closing 16 of them for violating the anti-coronavirus orders, while their counterparts in Zapopan slapped closure signs on 26 establishments.

In addition, Guadalajara municipal police officers broke up 651 unauthorized gatherings, meetings and parties. The municipality also reported that officials approached 3,467 individuals, urging them to respect the protocols, in particular the use of face masks,

In the last weekend of the January contingency, Zapopan authorities closed down an event being held at a Lomas de la Primavera brewery attended by 100 people.

Sine the start of the pandemic in March 2020, Zapopan has closed 402 businesses for various violations of the rules.
