Female cop dies in shootout

A female Guadalajara municipal police officer lost her life during an exchange of gunfire that occurred in the Jardines de la Paz neighborhood of the city on April 6.

pg5aThree officers, each on motorcycles, decided to follow a taxi that was being driven erratically. When they surrounded and stopped the vehicle outside a pizza restaurant, two men descended from the rear seat and began to fire weapons at them. The officers returned fire, killing both men instantly, but sustaining injuries themselves.

One of the officers, identified as Victoria Isabel Sanchez, 33, received a fatal shot to her head. She was rushed to the IMSS Zona 14 general hospital but died shortly thereafter. The other officers were both treated for firearm wounds but survived.

The taxi driver, who said he had picked up the pair  outside the San Juan de Dios Market and was taking them to Tonala, was placed under arrest. Police said they found a grenade and other tactical equipment inside the taxi.

Sanchez had been a police officer for more than eight years and had a 12-year-old daughter. She was given a send off with full honors the following day.
